What playing it feels like
- Made for an occasion — a holiday table, a shower, a gift swap — and the people at it.
- Loud: people talk, act, sing or shout, and the app keeps the secrets and the score.
- Plays well on a video call — the talking happens on camera and the app does the rest.
- Nothing to explain. Start it and go.
Good for
- Groups of 3 to 20
- Big groups, where most games run out of seats
- A quick round while you wait for everyone to arrive
Maybe skip when
- You are somewhere that needs to stay quiet
Pass the Chips is the chip-passing dice game families play round the holiday table, with its own name. Everyone starts with three chips. On your turn you roll one die for each chip you hold, up to three, and the dice decide everything: every L sends a chip to your left, every R to your right, every C into the pot in the middle, and a dot lets you keep it.
There are no decisions at all, which is the point. An eight-year-old and a grandparent play it as equals, the table cheers every roll, and the game swings wildly — someone down to their last chip can be handed three by their neighbours and end up the winner. Run out of chips and you are still in, waiting for chips to come back round.
The app rolls the dice, moves every chip and says in words where each one went, so nobody has to count. The last person holding any chips wins the game and the pot. The chips are points on a leaderboard and nothing else — no money, no stakes.
How to play Pass the Chips
- 1Create a room and share the code. Pass the Chips is for 3 to 20 people; everyone starts with three chips.
- 2On your turn, roll one die for each chip you hold — up to three dice.
- 3For each L, pass a chip to the player on your left. For each R, pass one to your right. For each C, put one in the pot. A dot means you keep that chip.
- 4No chips? You do not roll, but you stay in — your neighbours may roll chips back to you.
- 5The last player still holding chips wins the game and the pot. Play the host’s number of games; most pot points wins the night.
Pass the Chips FAQ
Is Pass the Chips the same as Left Right Center?
It is the same kind of game — three chips, dice that pass them left, right or to the centre — with its own name and its own dice faces on screen. If you know the boxed game, you already know how to play.
Is it gambling?
No. The chips are points on a leaderboard and nothing else. Nothing is bought, staked or won, and the app never suggests playing for money.
How many people can play?
Three to twenty. It works best with a big group, because more neighbours means more chips flying round the table.
What happens when I run out of chips?
You skip your rolls but stay in the game. If a neighbour rolls an L or R your way, you are back in with a chip.
Is there any strategy?
None at all — it is pure luck, which is exactly why it works for every age at once. The fun is in the table watching the chips move.
