What playing it feels like

  • Words, clues and guessing what the others are thinking.
  • Mostly quiet: the action happens on each player’s own screen.
  • Plays well on a video call — the talking happens on camera and the app does the rest.
  • Nothing to explain. Start it and go.

Good for

  • Groups of 3 to 10
  • A proper evening rather than a filler
  • A video call, with everyone on their own screen

Colour Clue is the party game where everyone discovers they see colour differently. One player is dealt four colours from a grid of ninety-six and picks one in secret. They give a one-word clue — "flamingo", "avocado", "bruise" — and everyone else drops a pin where they think it is.

Then a second clue, of up to two words, and a second pin each. A pin right on the colour scores three, next to it two, two away one; the clue-giver scores for every pin that lands close, so a clever clue pays twice. The arguments about whether "ocean" is blue or green are the game.

Every cell has a coordinate as well as a colour, so the grid can be read and talked about without seeing colour — and clues cannot be coordinates: no numbers, no single letters. The cue-giver rotates until everyone has given clues.

How to play Colour Clue

  1. 1Create a room and share the code. Colour Clue is for 3 to 10 players.
  2. 2The cue-giver is dealt four colours on their phone only and picks one.
  3. 3They give a one-word clue. Everyone else drops a pin on the grid — tap a colour, then drop the pin.
  4. 4The cue-giver adds a second clue of up to two words, and everyone drops a second pin somewhere new.
  5. 5Reveal: a pin on the colour scores 3, next to it 2, two away 1. The cue-giver scores 1 for every pin within one. The seat rotates; highest total wins.

Colour Clue FAQ

Is Colour Clue like Hues and Cues?

It is the same kind of game — a colour grid, a clue and pins scored by distance — with its own grid, its own scoring and its own name. If your group likes colour-guessing games, it will feel familiar in one round.

Can colour-blind players play?

Every cell has a coordinate (A1 to H12) shown on the axes and read out by screen readers, and the answer is always given by coordinate. A player with a colour-vision difference can play and follow every round — though, like everyone, they will see some colours their own way.

What counts as a clue?

One word the first time and up to two the second. No numbers and no single letters, because those would be coordinates rather than clues.

How is it scored?

A pin on the colour is 3 points, a neighbouring cell 2, two away 1. The cue-giver scores 1 for every pin within one cell of the colour, across both rounds of pins.

Can I see where others put their pins?

Not while they are deciding. After the first round of pins they are shown, so your second pin can learn from the room — as at a real table.
