What playing it feels like

  • A familiar classic, the kind that comes out when the family is together.
  • Loud: people talk, act, sing or shout, and the app keeps the secrets and the score.
  • Plays well on a video call — the talking happens on camera and the app does the rest.
  • Nothing to explain. Start it and go.

Good for

  • Groups of 3 to 6
  • A video call, with everyone on their own screen
  • A mixed group where half have never played it

Maybe skip when

  • You are somewhere that needs to stay quiet

Bhabhi — Get Away, Bhabho or Laad, depending on the family — is the Indian card game nobody wants to win last. The whole deck is dealt, the ace of spades leads, and the aim is simply to get rid of your cards. The one person left holding any is the Bhabhi, and gets teased about it until the next deal.

It turns on one rule. As long as everyone follows suit, the trick is thrown away and nobody suffers. The moment someone cannot follow, they throw any card they like — the thulla — and the trick stops dead: whoever played the highest card of the suit led has to pick the whole pile up into their hand. A good thulla lands just as the leader thought they were safe.

The app deals, leads the ace of spades for whoever holds it, throws away or hands over every trick, and keeps the order players got away in. Because a session should have a winner, each deal pays out by that order — first away scores most, the Bhabhi nothing.

How to play Bhabhi

  1. 1Create a room and share the code. Bhabhi is for 3 to 6 players; the whole deck is dealt out between you.
  2. 2Whoever holds the ace of spades leads it. In turn, everyone still holding cards plays one. Follow the suit led if you can.
  3. 3If everyone follows, the trick is thrown away and whoever played the highest card leads the next one.
  4. 4Cannot follow? Play any card — a thulla. The trick stops at once, and whoever played the highest card of the suit led picks up the whole trick and leads next.
  5. 5Run out of cards and you are safe. The last player still holding cards is the Bhabhi.
  6. 6Each deal scores by the order you got away: the first out scores the most, the Bhabhi nothing. After the host’s number of deals, the highest total wins.

Bhabhi FAQ

How many players can play Bhabhi?

Three to six on PartyDen. The whole deck is dealt, so with more players everyone simply holds fewer cards.

What is a thulla in Bhabhi?

The card you play when you cannot follow suit. It ends the trick immediately, and the player who put down the highest card of the suit that was led has to pick up the whole trick.

Who leads first?

Whoever was dealt the ace of spades, and they must lead it. After that, the highest card of a thrown-away trick leads, and whoever picks up a trick leads next.

Are Bhabhi and Get Away the same game?

Yes. Bhabhi, Bhabho, Laad and Get Away are names for the same family game, and house rules vary a little from home to home. The app plays the version above and the board says what is happening at every step.

What if everyone runs out on the same trick?

If the last cards all go out together on a thrown-away trick, the player who played the highest card is the Bhabhi — they would have had to lead next.
